ASM Call for abstracts - CLOSED

The ASM Call for abstracts is now closed.

All authors have now been notified if their abstract has been accepted. If you haven’t received any correspondence, please check your junk folder before contacting the ASM team.

ANZCA strongly supports all forms of anaesthesia and pain medicine research. This includes everything from sub-studies of large multicentre research such as the LOLIPOP trial (recently awarded a Medical Research Future Fund grant) to survey research or audits undertaken by trainees in their local hospitals and ANZCA-funded research.

Prospective authors are invited to submit their abstracts for the 2023 ASM in the categories of anaesthesia and pain medicine. In 2023, abstracts can also be submitted for the Obstetric Anaesthesia SIG satellite meeting for the Michael Paech Prize. More information about the Michael Paech Prize, eligibility information and submission guidelines are available on the meeting website. The format for this prize session will be oral presentations.

The Gilbert Brown Prize Session, ANZCA Trainee Academic Prize Session (ANZCA Trainee Research Prize and ANZCA Trainee Quality Improvement Prize), FPM Dean’s Prize and FPM Best Free Paper Award will be oral presentations. A number of electronic posters (ePosters) will also be selected for moderated oral presentations for the ASM Open ePoster Prize and Trainee ePoster Prize sessions.

The regional organising committee will also select a number of the abstracts presented at the 2023 ASM to be considered for publishing as an e-supplement to the Anaesthesia and Intensive Care journal or in the Pain Medicine journal.

Abstract submission guidelines
The ASM abstract submission guidelines, including information about eligibility guidelines for awards and prizes are available online. Abstract submission guidelines and prize information for the Obstetric Anaesthesia SIG satellite meeting are available on the meeting website. Abstract submissions for both meetings are now closed.

FAQs
Where can I find more information about the required format for abstracts, publication requirements and prize elibility?

The ASM abstract submission guidelines (available above) include important information on required formatting, publication requirements, eligibility for prizes and more. We highly recommend ALL authors review these prior to submitting their abstract.

How do I determine which prizes I’m eligible to be considered for?

The eligibility for prize sessions is assessed for the presenting author. Please refer to the eligibility criteria for individual prizes noted at the bottom of this page and the ASM abstract submission guidelines.

Can I be submit an abstract for both an ASM prize and the Michael Paech Prize?

Yes, authors can submit an abstract for both an ASM prize and the Michael Paech Prize, however if their abstract is selected for presentation for the Michael Paech Prize session, they will be ineligible for prizes at the ASM. Their abstract can however be accepted for display as an ePoster at the ASM.

Please note: If an author submits an abstract for both the ASM and Obstetric Anaesthesia SIG satellite meeting and it is accepted for both (i.e. for the Michael Paech Prize and as an ePoster for display only at the ASM), the author will be required to register as a paid delegate for both meetings by the close of early-bird registration, Friday 3 March 2023.

Can I submit an abstract if it has already been published?

You are able to submit for display only as an ePoster. It is not eligible for a prize session. You will be asked to note this in the submission questions.

Eligibility states: Abstracts will only be considered for ASM prizes if they have not been orally presented or published in a journal. Your abstract remains eligible for submission if it has been displayed at a scientific meeting i.e. as an ePoster.

Can I resubmit my abstract?

Yes, you are able to log back into the portal and resubmit your abstract any time prior to the close of abstracts on Sunday 15 January 2023 at 11.59pm AEDT. Please ensure you use the same email address.

Do the references need to be included within the abstract word limit?

Your abstract should not exceed 3500 characters including spaces (approximately 600 words) including references. A maximum of three (3) references are allowed and are included in the word limit. Tables, graphs, diagrams, symbols, scientific characters or internet links are not accepted.

Will late submissions be accepted?

Unfortunately we are unable to accept any abstract submissions after 11.59pm AEDT on Sunday 15 January 2023. Please ensure you submit your abstract well in advance of this date to ensure you complete the submission process and have sufficient time to clarify any queries prior to the call for abstracts close.

When will I find out if my abstract has been accepted?

All authors have now been notified if their abstract has been accepted. If you haven’t received any correspondence, please check your junk folder before contacting the ASM team.
