ANZCA conference and event cancellations: FAQs

We have prepared this series of FAQs to provide you with accurate information. These FAQs will be updated as information becomes available. We encourage you to check regularly.

What events have been cancelled?
We have made the difficult decision to cancel the following events:
• 2020 Perth Annual Scientific Meeting (ASM): 1-5 May
• Emerging Leaders Conference: 28-30 April
• FPM Symposium: 1 May
• Perioperative Medicine SIG Meeting: 30 April

Why has ANZCA cancelled these events?
The risks of spreading the infection amongst a large number of delegates at an ASM and satellite meetings and the subsequent lengthy quarantine period creates an unacceptable risk to the health systems in both countries. More and more hospitals and networks require our fellows and trainees to stay in hospitals to help manage the outbreak and care for our communities.

Am I eligible for a refund?
All delegates will receive a full refund for the cost of their registration.
You will be refunded for:
• meeting registration
• workshops
• SGDs
• masterclasses
• social program
• optional activities

What if I want to transfer to a later date?
If you would like to transfer to an event at a later date, we ask that you wait for your refund and then re-book onto the new event.

How long will it take to receive my refund?
We are working with our registration partners to progress this. Your patience is appreciated whist we navigate the challenges of doing this on such a large scale.

Will I receive a refund on my accommodation?
If you booked your accommodation through the ASM link, we have taken the liberty of cancelling this on your behalf. Please contact anzca2020@wsm.com.au if you are still travelling to Perth and we will connect you with the hotel to reinstate your booking.

If you made your own arrangement for accommodation direct with hotels, please refer to the individual hotel’s cancellation policy.

Will my insurance cover the cancellation of my airfares to the events?
Flights and insurance are the responsibility of individual attendees. Please check your insurance cover carefully. Many insurers have exemptions for infectious diseases and pandemics, but the policies are different for each insurer.

*I have been selected to attend the 2020 Emerging Leaders Conference (ELC). Will I have the opportunity to attend next year?
All delegates invited to attend in 2020 will be contacted individually by email with further information. Your patience is appreciated whilst we navigate the challenges of this situation.

I was presenting at the College Ceremony, will I have the opportunity to present at the 2021 ASM?
Any new fellows who were registered to present at this year’s College Ceremony will be given the opportunity to present at the 2021 ASM in Melbourne.

*I am in my last year of eligibility to present for the prize sessions, what happens now?
Information around extensions of eligibility are being explored and further information will be available at a later date. Those who were accepted to present in the below sessions will be contacted directly:
• Gilbert Brown Prize
• FPM Dean’s Prize
• ANZCA Trainee Academic Prize

*My abstract was selected for display or for a moderated prize session at the ASM, what now?
In light of the cancellation of our ASM, we would like to take some time to consider all options available to appropriately honour your work. Normally at this time, we would be sending you a link asking you to upload your ePoster or award presentation, at this point in time we will be holding off sending any links out while we go through options.

*I was attending a business meeting, what now?
We will be communicating with ANZCA and FPM staff who will work with you on rescheduling as many meetings as possible.

What next for other college related events?
In line with many other colleges and societies the college has suspended all face-to-face meetings and events until the end of May unless otherwise advised. Organisers will be in touch with fellows, trainees and SIMGs impacted by this decision and the college is working on contingencies.
