Perioperative Medicine SIG meeting

The Perioperative Medicine Special Interest Group (SIG) Executive Committee invites you to join us for a one-day Perioperative Medicine SIG satellite meeting on Thursday April 30, 2020, at the Perth Convention Centre, in the lead up to the ANZCA Annual Scientific Meeting. Registration for the meeting will open on Friday November 15, 2019.

The day will explore the full circle of the patient perioperative journey from early contemplation of surgery in primary care through to postoperative recovery, rehabilitation and handover, back to primary care. We are fortunate to have two exceptional international speakers who are at the forefront of perioperative medicine (POM) in our program: Professor Ramani Moonesinghe (UK) and Professor Solomon Aronson (US). Professor Moonesinghe is Professor of Perioperative Medicine at UCL and works clinically at University College London Hospitals. She is a director of the Health Services Research Centre at the RCoA and the NIHT funded Surgical Outcomes Research Centre at UCL/UCLH. Professor Moonesinghe will cover all essential elements of a POM service, including ongoing audit as to its outcome benefits. Professor Solomon Aronson is a tenured professor at Duke University and Executive Vice-Chairman in the Department of Anesthesiology, and will discuss the Preanaesthesia and Surgical Screening Clinic. In addition to this, we have a great line-up of speakers from different specialties and disciplines to educate us on topics from shared decision making to the role of allied health, geriatrician input, the value of advanced recovery room care, rehabilitation, and what our surgeons are looking for in a POM service.

Dr Vanessa Beavis, the current Chair of the Perioperative Steering Committee, will close off the day with an inspiring talk on the future direction and vision of POM in Australia and New Zealand.

It promises to be a fun, educational day for all those interested in improving our patients’ perioperative journey. I look forward to seeing you there.

Dr Jill Van Acker
Perioperative Medicine SIG, Convenor
