Using social media at the ASM – 2025

A delegate’s guide

Social media can really help you get the most out of the ASM. For example, you can use it to:

  • Network with other delegates.
  • Exchange ideas
  • Ask questions.
  • Provide feedback.
  • Share conference content from others’ perspectives.
  • Participate in sessions you can’t attend in person.

We really want you to use social media at the ASM. Which is why this year we’ve made all sessions “open” for delegates to discuss on social media channels (primarily Bluesky) unless otherwise advised.

The session chairs will flag any presentations, slides, or findings (for example, where content is confidential or sensitive) that are to be left out of the social media conversation. Please respect the wishes of your peers and colleagues in this regard.

Please also keep your social media conversations collaborative and respectful. The ASM is covered by ANZCA’s social media policy and you may also be subject to your hospital’s policies. The AMA has produced some really handy guidelines to help Australian and New Zealand medical practitioners use social media confidently and responsibly.

Bluesky

How to join the conversation in six simple steps
ANZCA recently made the decision to move off X/Twitter due to a significant drop in engagement and activity on the platform and its increasingly hostile environment. So this Cairns ASM will be the first that we’re using Bluesky instead. Much like X, it’s the ultimate conference tool. If you don’t already have a Bluesky account, maybe now’s the time to take the plunge? It’s really straightforward.

Once you’ve set yourself up with a Bluesky account, the next step is to “join the community”. Don’t worry, you don’t have to start posting yet if you don’t feel ready to. This is about building your network.

Start by following some key accounts. You can do this by clicking on the “handles” below and then clicking “follow”.

Next, check out our ANZCA starter pack. We’ve created this pack with all the anaesthesia and pain medicine people and organisations you need to follow. You can simply click “Follow all” to follow all the accounts in the list.

Finally, here are some hashtags to look at. Hashtags (#) are used to index keywords or topics and allow users to easily follow topics they’re interested in. This can include events, and most conferences now – including the ASM and FPM Symposium – will have a unique hashtag.

  • #ASM25CNS (the official ASM hashtag – already up and running. So take a look at how people are using it).
  • #FPM25CNS (the official FPM Symposium hashtag).
  • #AnSky (a common hashtag for anaesthesia threads).
  • #MedSky (a common hashtag for any medical content).

How to use the conference hashtag

#ASM25CNS

Hashtags can be used to create a virtual network that can be accessed:

  • By anyone at any time.
  • On any device.
  • From anywhere in the world.

This makes them particularly handy for conferences! You can use the hashtag to find any posts that have used #ASM25CNS and connect with other delegates, share your insights or favourite sessions and be part of the buzz. Using the hashtag also makes it easy for us to find your posts and share them with our network!
